Offshore wind still on hold, but offshore oil drilling areas expanded

Here's an interesting comparison of articles.

In the NY Times today: Obama Details Plan to Open Offshore Areas to Oil Drilling
He {Obama} said that his plan to allow drilling along the Atlantic coastline, the eastern Gulf of Mexico and the north coast of Alaska — ending a longstanding moratorium on exploration from the northern tip of Delaware to the central coast of Florida, covering 167 million acres of ocean — would balance the need to produce more domestic energy while protecting natural resources.

In Renewableenergyworld.com today: Cape Wind One Step Further

Even though Cape Wind completed state and local permitting in 2008, it is still awaiting a final federal permitting decision from U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar who has recently stated he will make his decision by the end of April.

More areas opened to offshore oil drilling, and still no offshore windpower in the US.

Windpower blows electric cars down the highway

Another good announcement came yesterday with Nissan's electric vehicle LEAF arriving at a competitive pricepoint. Electric vehicles are a good partner for US windpower, which can blow at any time day or night.  There isn't storage now for those off peak-consumption cycles, but electric vehicles could be the distributed storage of the future for morning/evening wind.  It would be a good partnership to get off foreign oil, take advantage of free fuel, and create local jobs.  Offshore wind also blows 95% of the time- and could create easier charging access for cars in the most populated coastal cities (less transmission line loss).

Cardboard Art - Amazing Upcycled Cardboard Art by Mark Langan

I'm inspired with the upcycling of waste products. So many useful resources go straight into the landfills; let's all embrace reuse instead of cutting down more trees, sending men down into more mines and devastating more untouched landscapes.

Solar Powered Christmas Tree Lights

I'd like to introduce my neighbors to this technology of powering Christmas lights with solar power.  Christmas lights have been running on houses up and down my street for the last month.  I feel like a Scrooge, but all I can think about when I see the lights are the fossil fuels burning to power these superfluous holiday decorations.  Let's not celebrate religious holidays at the expense of our nonrenewable fuels.

No Such Thing as Clean Coal

In this big race towards "clean coal," the waste products from coal have to go somewhere.  If the coal waste products don't get released into the air, they are injected into the ground or water.  Surprise surprise, coal is still dirty.  Can't we get past using coal?  Such a 13th century technology...
